I like, but I think you got it right with the first design, the one with the search box.

Looks okay to me. But it looks a bit bare. You should add a little more information on that frontpage.

What should I add on the frontpage, its only a link directory Shocked.

I want to add a search box where it used to be just haven't looked on how to do it yet.

Well, Google is a search engine. Perhaps that is it's main selling point previously.
You could add some feeds, news, stories.....
