Not many people use banner adverts this days compared with text ads, I wonder if banner advertising is going to fade away over the next few years

There's a certain thing called banner/advertising blindness.
People are getting used to ads, so they ignore them.
It's up to the webmaster to integrate ads into the website.
So the ads will look like a part of the website instead of just advertising.
Personally I believe that banner advertising will fade away eventually.
Or at least become less popular.

I agree, banners are dead. Text ads are better but even with them you get people that are text ad blind, you have to almost throw the ads in sombodys face.

Or do it very subtle so people think that it's actually part of a menu for example...

Text advertising is the way to go now though.

I don't think that banner ads are completely dead.  One of main problems of banner ad is that banner ad is not well-targeted generally speaking.  If it's well-targeted, then it should work all right.

It's very difficult to integrate banners into a forum seamlessly.  That means that it's very difficult to get ok CTR.  That means banners in the forum aren't very effective.

Yup, too bad.
A portal perhaps will help improve things.
